Should I update add-in components when prompted?

Should I update add-in extensions when prompted?

From time to time, Joomla will prompt you that component updates are available. Should you update them?

In general, the answer to that is yes.

Many extension updates address bugs or security issues as well as often providing additional functionality, and it is important for the security of your site that you keep all third party extensions up to date.

BUT BEFORE UPDATING, REMEMBER TO TAKE A BACKUP WITH AKEEBA BACKUP FIRST, even if one of the updates is Akeeba!

If you have extensions installed that have been customised other than through template overrides, note that updating a component may overwrite those customisations. In general, when building your site we do not customise core code unless absolutely essential, and unless you have been advised otherwise, it is safe to assume that it is OK to update any component listed.

Most extensions will update seamlessly, but sometimes you might encounter updates that fail. This can simply be due to the update package being temporaily unavailable, or it might be a paid-for extension that requires a manual update. If you have a problem with a failed update, ask us to update it for you.

Note that unless you have an active support agreement in place, updates or any other work we carry out on your site is chargeable.
