Other aspects of good practice
The Web is all about linking. In addition to having plenty of linked content within the site, build additional sections containing links to external sites, where appropriate. Even more important in search engine ranking is the number of external sites linking into the site being ranked - this is often referred to as link popularity or Page Rank. Linking to external sites may encourage them to link back to you (particularly if you ask)
Avoid unnecessary use of Frames presentation, as Frames code can hide the text content of a site. Recent developments in search engine technology allow for some Frames penetration, but this often results in "orphaned" internal frame pages, so it still does not help to construct a site in Frames when there is no particular reason to do so.
Avoid rendering an entire site in a non-text format such as Flash animation or streaming video. These kinds of technologies can be very useful and provide eye-catching presentations, but equally reduce usability, accessibility, and search engine visibility. If you must put a Flash animation on the home page, make sure there is a prominent link to a non-flash version too.
Where dynamic database delivery is used or planned, take account of the need to index the content and make allowances for search engine spiders. Methods for doing this vary with the different delivery mechanisms available
If you are keen on creating a site that is highly designed from an aesthetic point of view, remember that the design must also satisfy the functional requirement. Bridge designers have provided some of the most beautifully designed structures in history. But nobody thanks a bridge designer for allowing their customers to fall in the river.
