Main UK Search Engines
You might find our quick guide to the UK Top Ten search engines useful, although in reality the top 10 is dominated by the top three: Google, MSN and Yahoo. These will generally account for over 95% of any traffic you are likely to get from search engines.
  Web Link
  Link   Ask / Teoma
Formerly Ask Jeeves, Ask is powered by search engine Teoma. Its paid submission programme was suspended towards the end of 2004, and as the index is increasingly slow to be updated, it currently takes quite a while to get listed.
  Link   Google
The most popular and influential of search engines with 70% of the UK market. The Google directory is supplied by DMOZ.
  Link   Lycos
Slipped back in the race over the last couple of years. Organic results are delivered from Inktomi, and sponsored results (PPC) from both Overture and Google. No free submit programme.
  Link   Mirago
One of the more popular UK search engines. Free submission scheme is still in place, but spidering is quite infrequent, so the paid inclusion scheme is worth taking up.
  Link   Miva
Miva is the new combined identity for E-Spotting and Findwhat. Findwhat acquired E-Spotting towards the end of 2004, and the two operations have been combined under the Miva Brand. Miva is not a search engine, but is a PPC network that feeds PPC adve
  Link   Alta Vista
Previously one of the biggest and best search engines but now overtaken by Google. Now owned by Yahoo, and rather the poor relation, but still one of the more popular engines. Free submission is via Yahoo and the Paid inclusion programme is now Overt
  Link   Windows Live Search (MSN)
Relaunched as Windows Live Search in September 2006. Since launching as MSN in early 2005 Windows Live has been delivering high quality search results, although this is not reflected in market share where it holds 3rd place behind Google and Yahoo!
  Link   Yahoo! UK
Yahoo! is still one of the most influential search resources, not least because of its steady acquisition of several rivals. Overtaken in popularity by Google over recent years. Web search results now take priority over directory results, which rathe
  Link   Yahoo! Paid Search
Formerly Overture, and not strictly a search engine, but included here as the largest of the Pay per Click networks. Yahoo! Paid Search feeds PPC sponsored listings to most of the major players, so claims a very wide audience.
  Link   DMOZ - Open Directory
Highly influential directory compiled by volunteers and sourced by most of the major search engines. The Google Directory results are from DMOZ. Entry is free but usually takes several weeks or even months.
